The James Beard Foundation just announced their 2017 program, and there are numerous grants, scholarships and programs ready to assist both the aspiring and established culinary professional. This program is designed to offer financial assistance for educational programs at licensed or accredited culinary schools, hospitality institutions, colleges or universities.
The James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program was established in 1991 and in the past 25 years, as of 2016, they have given out over $7 million in financial aid to over 1,850 recipients. They are also please to announce that this year they are launching a Women’s Leadership Program, committed to advancing women in the culinary industry.
Here are the three basic types of awards:
Friends of James Beard awards cash grants applied directly to tuition (and sometimes other school related expenses).
James Beard School Scholarships are tuition waivers granted by educational institutions.
The Jean-Louis Palladin Professional Work/Study program covers expenses for experiential learning at farms, fisheries, wineries and other venues of food production.
There is also the recently launched James Beard Foundation’s National Scholars Program, which provides ten, $20,000 scholarships to food focused candidates of exceptional talent. One person will be chosen from each of the ten geographic regions defined by the foundation.
